Alocasia: Bold, Beautiful, and a Little Bit Bougie

Category: Plants for Every Space

If you’re looking for a plant that turns heads and knows it, meet Alocasia. With big, dramatic leaves that look like they came from a fantasy novel, this plant is the ultimate statement piece. But heads up: it’s also got a bit of an attitude.

Once you understand its care needs, though? Alocasia will reward you with jaw-dropping growth—and maybe even a new leaf show every few weeks.

Why You’ll Love It

🌿 Iconic arrow- or heart-shaped leaves
🌱 Tons of striking varieties (like Polly, Frydek, Zebrina, and more)
💧 Grows from bulbs, so it can bounce back after a dormancy nap
🪴 Looks stunning on a tabletop or pedestal

Alocasia Care Tips

Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Too much sun can scorch those dramatic leaves.
Water: Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. These beauties hate extremes—no drought, no swamp.
Humidity: HIGH. Alocasia is a humidity queen. Think 60%+. Mist it, group it, or plug in a humidifier.
Soil: Needs excellent drainage. All our Alocasias come in a Roots2Plant Alocasia mix which includes Pon and Stratum
Pot: A snug Clear Nursery Pot helps monitor root and bulb health while giving it room to stretch.
Feed: Light fertilizer during the growing season helps it produce bigger, better leaves.
Boost: Use Root Boost after repotting, propagating, or recovering from leaf loss to support the roots.

What to Expect (So You Don’t Freak Out)

🍂 One leaf in, one leaf out—Alocasia often drops a leaf when a new one grows
🌡️ Goes semi-dormant in cooler temps
🧅 Bulbs may go "silent" for weeks before popping up again

Propagation: Growing from Corms

Unlike many houseplants, Alocasias grow from corms—tiny bulb-like structures underground that sprout into new plants over time. They don’t grow well from stem cuttings, but if you’re patient, corms are magic.

How to Propagate Alocasia from Corms:

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot and locate the small corms near the base or in the soil.

  2. Separate them carefully (they look like little onions!)

  3. Place corms in moist sphagnum moss or soil—don’t bury too deep!

  4. Keep warm and humid, and wait 2–6 weeks for growth.

  5. Add a drop of Root Boost to encourage faster, stronger root development.

Pro Tip: Use a Clear Nursery Pot while sprouting corms so you can keep an eye on root growth without disturbing them.Root Tip

Don’t throw away a pot just because it looks empty! Alocasia bulbs can rest underground and return when conditions improve. Keep it warm, lightly moist, and patient.
