How to Encourage Bushier Growth Without More Plants

Category: The Dirt on Plant Care

Wish your plant looked fuller instead of tall, spindly, or stringy? Good news: you don’t need to buy more plants—you just need to train the one you’ve got to grow bushier.

Yup, it’s a thing—and we’re going to show you how to do it.

Why Some Plants Get Leggy

🌞 Reaching for more light
🌿 Natural growth habit
🌱 Not enough pruning or pinching
🪴 Growing from just one vine or stem

Easy Ways to Encourage Bushier Growth

✂️ Prune or pinch the tips
Snip just above a leaf node to encourage side shoots! This works beautifully for Pothos, Peperomia, Ficus, and most trailing or upright plants.

🌿 Replant cuttings back into the same pot
Snip a few healthy strands, root them (in water or moss), and replant to fill out the base of the pot. Use Root Boost for faster, stronger roots!

💡 Give it more light
Plants often stretch when they’re not getting enough. Move it closer to a window or use a grow light to help it compact and fill out.

🪴 Rotate regularly
Even, full growth starts with even lighting. Give your plant a quarter turn every week.

🌱 Use the right soil
Our Signature Grow Mix promotes healthy roots, which means stronger stems and fuller growth up top.

Plants That LOVE a Good Trim

  • Pothos

  • Philodendron (heartleaf, Brasil, Micans)

  • Peperomia

  • Fiddle Leaf Fig (yes, really!)

  • Spider Plant

Root Tip

Don’t be afraid to snip! A clean cut can actually jumpstart new growth—and it’s super satisfying to see your plant bounce back even better.
