Pot Size Matters: How to Choose the Right Home for Your Plant

Category: Plant Parent Essentials

When it comes to plant pots, size really does matter. Too small, and your roots get cramped. Too big, and you risk soggy soil and sad, struggling leaves. So how do you pick the perfect fit? Don’t worry—your leafy besties are in good hands now.

The Golden Rule

🪴 Go 1–2 inches bigger than your plant’s current root ball when repotting. That gives it room to grow without drowning in extra soil.

Signs It’s Time to Size Up

  • Roots growing out of the drainage holes

  • Water runs straight through the pot

  • The plant is top-heavy or keeps tipping

  • You haven’t repotted in over a year (hello root prison)

What Happens if You Go Too Big?

A too-big pot means too much soil. Too much soil = stays wet too long. And that’s how root rot crashes the party. No thanks.

Root Tip

Start small and step up slowly. Clear nursery pots are great for seeing how much space your roots really need, especially for propagations and new plant babies.

Plant Parent Favorites

Need a little help choosing? Here’s our go-to guide:

  • 2.5” pots – Perfect for rooted cuttings or baby plants

  • 4” pots – Ideal for young plants ready to size up

  • 6”+ pots – Great for mature plants with strong root systems
