Root rot. Just the name makes plant parents cringe. It’s sneaky, it’s smelly, and worst of all—it can take down your favorite plant fast if you don’t catch it in time. But don’t worry—we’re here to help you spot the signs early and fix the problem before it spreads.
Root rot happens when your plant’s roots stay too wet for too long. Without oxygen, roots start to break down, turning mushy and brown instead of firm and white. It usually starts in the soil, out of sight—so learning to read the signs is key.
🚨 Yellowing leaves that drop way too easily
🚨 Mushy, black or brown roots (if you peek in a clear pot or during repotting)
🚨 Funky smell from the soil
🚨 Soil stays wet forever
🚨 Wilting even after watering—yep, root rot can trick you into thinking your plant is thirsty
Gently remove the plant from its pot
Rinse off the roots and trim away anything mushy or black
Let the healthy roots dry out for a bit
Repot into fresh, dry Signature Grow Mix
Use a Clear Nursery Pot with drainage so you can monitor recovery
Add a drop of Root Boost to support healthy regrowth
Water less, not more—especially in winter. Make sure your pot has drainage holes, and never let your plant sit in standing water.
Want to avoid root rot altogether?
Use Signature Grow Mix for fast drainage, Clear Nursery Pots to keep an eye on root health, and give your plants the recovery boost they need with Root Boost.
Every root has a story, and we can't wait to see yours grow…
